DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Convention will be held on October 19-21\, 2023 in Anchorage\, Alaska. The annual convention serves as the principal forum and voice for the Alaska Native community in addressing critical issues of public policy and government. The convention convenes thousands of official delegates and participants from membership organizations across the state. \nAt the Convention\, delegates discuss strategic opportunities and challenges\, listen to memorable keynote speeches\, hear reports from political leaders and presentations from expert panels\, and share stories resilience\, experiences\, strengths\, knowledge and hope for the future. \nThe resolutions passed by the voting delegates set the priorities for the year and guide AFN’s efforts.  The Convention is the largest representative annual gathering in the United States of Native peoples.

SUMMARY:Young Providers/Youth Culture Bearer Nomination Deadline
DESCRIPTION:BSNC seeks nominations for the Young Providers Awards and Youth Culture Bearer Award. These awards will annually recognize one young person in the region\, and one young person who lives out of region\, who serve as positive examples and who contribute on a daily basis to the health and well-being of their families\, communities and culture. \nThese awards recognize young people who perpetuate Alaska Native culture and a positive lifestyle not by measure of academic or financial success\, but by serving as positive examples and providing for their community in the one or more of the following ways: \n\nHe/she cares for family through subsistence activities\, Elder care\, or mentoring of young people in traditional activities and values or education.\nHe/she is involved in activities that benefit the community such as suicide prevention programs\, youth sports\, community well-being and health.\n\nThe recipients will be awarded $1\,000 each. The deadline for nominations is July 7\, 2023. Nominations will be accepted from family members\, tribal and corporation board members\, schoolteachers or administrators and community members. \nAward Criteria: \n\nNominee must be less than 30 years of age. Nominations for teenagers and those younger are welcomed and encouraged.\nYoung Provider Nominees must reside in or have family connection to one of the Bering Straits Region villages.\nYouth Culture Bearer Nominees must reside outside of the Bering Straits Region.\nThe awardees will be determined to be the best three nominees based on their fulfillment of the intent of the award.

This year\, BSNC added “Cultural Regalia” as a contest category. For millennia\, our ancestors have clothed themselves in uniquely and aesthetically made clothing\, skillfully tailored for survival\, utilizing the same resources central to our sustenance – land and sea animals\, birds and fish. Our region is culturally diverse\, with Central Yup’ik\, Inupiaq and Siberian Yupik communities and our cultural regalia/traditional clothing is just as diverse.
